Happy Friday, Femmebabes! It’s time again for a Femmetrepreneurs Spotlight Friday!
This week’s Femmetastic Femmetrepreneur is Emma Quinn with Piffy & Egg.
Piffy & Egg is a crafts business created to aid the charity: Mind. Initially set up to sell handmade art, the business has grown and evolved into an online platform for mental health awareness and education. Each piece is custom-made and personal to you. Piffy & Egg provides you with the opportunity to write to them with ideas and design requests based on the gift receiver’s personality and style. The talented artisans at Piffy & Egg will then create the perfect gift for you. Piffy & Egg aims to grow so that others who have turned to art therapy during their mental health journey can share their stories and sell their work if they wish to do so. This fabulous company also does commissioned work and has designed a digital bundle for a leading design company and a local composer’s latest EP cover.
Emma Quinn received both of her degrees from Northumbria University in Newcastle, England. She achieved a BSc in Biology a Masters in Nursing. After graduation Emma landed amrewarding job in Cardiothoracic intensive care, but she knew that is wasn’t meant to be her forever job. Emma continues to practice in nursing to keep her skills up while she runs Piffy & Eggs.
She also had a whole host of other jobs prior to becoming an entrepreneur- waitressing, outdoor retail sales assistant, and zoological aquarist. When asked about what led her to quit her past jobs and start her own business Emma says, “I have enjoyed all of my jobs for different reasons but there was always something missing; I hadn’t really considered my dream job or knew what that looked like until I took some space to figure it out. It exists! I wanted to be my own boss, so I became her. I wanted to be creative, so I allowed myself to be. I wanted to help others, so I made peace with myself first.”
Ms. Quinn created her first copper piece in August 2017 following a severe mental health breakdown. She was in a creative flurry of redecorating rooms and frantically clearing things out and needed something to look at to bring some warmth to a room that was also orderly and clean. The geometric style worked wonderfully and created a great minimalist yet playful image. But it wasn’t until February 2018 that Ms. Quinn considered nurturing this passion into a business after a lot of encouragement from friends.
Piffy & Egg will be launching officially on August 11th this year with the motto “Creating happiness through art.”
If you are like me, you are wondering where the name “Piffy & Egg” comes from. Ms. Quinn explains, “The brand name, Piffy and Egg, is actually mine and my best friend’s nicknames for each other! We were giggling so much and making piggy noises in the back of the car when we were younger which developed in to “Piffy” over time. “Egg”, we can’t really explain… That’s me!”
Ms. Quinn names herself as her greatest obstacle when it comes to becoming an entrepreneur. “I struggled with really low self-esteem and confidence for such a long time and as a result I didn’t have any self-belief. This held me back and filled me with excuses not to start my business- ‘you aren’t good enough,’ ‘it’s unrealistic,’ “no one will buy into you.’ Overcoming these challenges took a long time and was by no means easy. After stripping everything back and getting to the root of my unhappiness, I realized that being kinder to myself was well overdue. Now instead of saying ‘I can’t,’ I say I can. Instead of ‘What if,’ I ask, ‘what’s next?’ I allowed myself freedom to think how I wanted to think and it has completely changed my life.”
Emma Quinn offers this piece of advice for women who want to break into the business world, “Believe in yourself. There are a thousand sayings that are motivating and inspiring, but this one is the most important for me. You need to trust in your ideas, goals and visions and see yourself as a success – once you see her, you can become her.”
Emma grew up on the coast of North East England. In her free time, Emma loves to be outside – rain or shine! She goes out to the beach to think and clear her head. She enjoys kayaking, climbing, and hiking too.
Her favorite motivational quote is:
“It’s OK if you fall down and lose your spark. Just make sure that when you get back up, you rise as the whole damn fire.” – Collette Werden.
